I continue to work on the overall shape of the bird whittling small
cuts off and around the head and body and look at getting the
beak proportions right. Great care has to be taken when working
on the beak as too much whittled off at this stage could spoil the
bird.
When I am satisfied with the shape I will lightly sand the bird,
working first around the head and beak of the flycatcher then the
body but I support the tail during this process as the tail is very
thin and could easily snap off
I would use a 120 grade paper for the sanding of the bird at this
stage.
After sanding, I notice the head is slightly out of shape and the
tail needs more work. This can be rectified with the use of the
knife and is possible with care. I then insert the eyes.
After almost 8 hours the flycatcher has it final sanding using a
320 grade finishing paper to get it smooth.
I then seal the wood, this normally takes time and I put about
4 coats on, sanding between each coat.
Well, I am off to paint our flycatcher now. If you would like to see
